Tanvald is a natural center of life in the area of the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. It is also a tourist center of the eastern tip of the Jizera Mountains, where hundreds of domestic and foreign visitors come throughout the year. Due to the mountain environment, hiking, cycling and skiing are the most popular.
On 1 January 2003, Tanvald became a city with an office with extended powers, the so-called Municipality III, as part of the public administration reform. The territorial district of the Tanvald Municipal Office includes the following municipalities: Albrechtice v Jizerských horách, Desná, Harrachov , Jiřetín pod Bukovou , Kořenov , Plavy , Smržovka , Tanvald , Velké Hamry a Zlatá Olešnice .

The first written note about Tanvald as a timber settlement located on the left bank of the river Kamenice is coming from the second half of the 16th century. At that time the settlement was probably maintained by the village of Smržovka. From the beginning of the 17th century Tanvald probably exists independently. People lived here a very poor life. The land provided just very modest harvest, and the serfs had to work for their nobles in the forests and in the agriculture.
